Explore 80+ tools to assess balance, gait, ADL, IADL, cognition, motor and sensory skills. This course will provide PT and OT clinicians with better assessment skills, the ability to select and interpret standardized and functional assessments based upon clinical presentation and diagnosis. Hands on course – that will provide you opportunity practice and see numerous tools that can immediately be incorporated into your practice. 8:30-10:00 am Review types of assessments (standardized, non-standardized), professional considerations in delegation and supervision, influences and the selection of assessment tools based on unique characteristics of patient & the psychometric properties of a tool, evidence-based practice in day to day practice& resources to create a professional clinical tool box
10:00-10:15 am Break
10:15-12:00 pm Review of balance and gait assessments, experiential application of balance and gait assessments, non-traditional questionnaires and interview practices for balance to establish fall risk, eliciting critical information from balance and gait assessments to establish risk factors, normative comparison and predictability data for documentation and goal setting purposes. Review of ADL and IADL assessments pertinent to establishing mastery in various functional demands like in home mobility, transfers, ADL and IADL tasks as well as indoor powered mobility device utilization. Experiential application and exploration of commercially available and peer reviewed tools.
12:00-1:00 pm Lunch (on your own)
1:00-2:30 pm Review of cognitive screening and comprehensive assessment tools pertinent to the PT practitioner to understand strengths as well as areas of deficits. Review of how to define unique therapeutic exercise and activity interventions when considering cognitive limitations. Review perceptual, sensory and physiological assessment processes and tools inclusive of the relevance of vital sign assessment, hand assessments, cutaneous sensibility and pain tools. Occupational performance and IADL assessments tools reviewed and education on relevance to determining appropriate living situation and determining risk factors for living independently. Hands on exploration of commercially available as well as peer reviewed assessments.
2:30-2:45 pm Break
2:30-3:00 pm Case Studies – small group work – application of case studies to determine evaluation tools, reassessment practices, progressive tools throughout treatment regime and anticipated tools to measure outcomes as well levels of independence in ADL and functional mobility.
3:00-3:45 pm Documentation review and experiential documentation practice session. Review of the elements of an evaluation, progress report and discharge summary incorporating elements from tests and measurements to establish medical necessity and the need for skilled therapy intervention.
3:45-4:00 pm Questions and Answers opportunities & completion of program evaluation.
