An informative course on examining and treating the non-operative shoulder. Great for outpatient based clinicians! The course will begin with an in depth anatomy review of the shoulder complex. The examination and evaluation processes will be reviewed and practiced in lab. Common shoulder pathologies, such as rotator cuff impingement, shoulder instability, adhesive capsulitis, and acromioclavicular injuries, will be discussed. The participant will be able to apply their knowledge through case studies and discussion. OTPTAT Board Approved 6 CE Hours (both OT & PT) MPTA-0816-1341 (Article 1 of PDR Activities) 6 PDU's for NBCOT Renewal Management of the Non-Operative Shoulder-Time Ordered Agenda 8:00 - 8:30 am Registration, refreshments 8:30 - 8:45 am Welcome, ice breakers 8:45 - 9:30 am Anatomy review – Review musculoskeletal and neuromuscular anatomy of the shoulder complex to prepare the participants to learn and discuss specific shoulder pathologies. 9:30 - 10:30 am Examination of the shoulder complex- Learn how to properly conduct an examination of the shoulder to obtain comprehensive subjective and objective information. This section will provide the participant with a better understanding of how to correctly assess the anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex. Subjective history, posture, scapulohumeral rhythm, ROM, manual muscle testing, reflexes and special tests will be reviewed. 10:30 - 10:45 am Break 10:45 - 11:45 am Rotator cuff impingement – Review the underlying mechanism of rotator cuff disease, including primary impingement, secondary impingement, tensile overload, macrotraumatic tendon failure, and posterior impingement. The participant will learn how to identify the hallmark signs and symptoms of rotator cuff impingement as well as the best interventions to treat it. Lab will be performed after lecture. 11:45 - 12:00 pm Case study – small group work – Complete a rotator cuff impingement based case study to give participants the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned in the previous section. 12:00 - 1:00 pm Lunch 1:00 - 2:15 pm Shoulder instability and labral involvement – Identify what shoulder instability is and how it affects the labrum. Classifications of shoulder instability will be discussed to provide the learner with a comprehensive understanding of how to properly assess and treat the injury. The participant will learn how to identify the signs and symptoms of shoulder instability as well as the best interventions to treat it. Lab will be performed after lecture. 2:15 - 3:15 pm Adhesive capsulitis, acromioclavicular joint injuries – Review the most effective examination and treatment techniques to identify and improve adhesive capsulitis. Learn the common mechanism of injury behind acromioclavicular injuries and the different types of separations. Assessment of all types of separation and appropriate interventions will be discussed. 3:15 - 3:30 pm Break 3:30 - 3:45 pm Case study– small group work – Complete a shoulder instability case study to give participants the opportunity to apply the knowledge they learned. 3:45 - 4:00 pm Question and answer opportunities, completion of program evaluation Instructor: Stacy Ruffing PT, DPT I am a therapist in a hospital based outpatient setting for University Hospitals in Concord, Ohio. A proud graduate of Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio. I have many years of experience with a background in orthopedics, dry needling, concussion training, and kinesio taping. I am the co-founder of the Cleveland Orthopedic Rehab Group, a locally run journal club for clinicians in northeast Ohio. I have a strong interest in public speaking and enjoy educating others through CE courses and local community events. |

Registrants canceling outside (10 calendar days) of the course may receive a refund less a 20% cancellation fee, transfer to another course without penalty, or keep a credit with us for a future course without penalty.
