      A Clinician’s Tool box to Better Understanding Cognitive Impairment
 
Overview of Course
This course will provide rehab professionals with the knowledge and tools necessary to understand cognitive disability assess cognitive status and identify & implement treatment approaches to rehabilitate, compensate and/or adapt for cognitive impairments.  This 6 hour didactic & experiential course will provide a thorough review of clinical conditions impacting cognitive abilities as well how and when to rehabilitate or manage the cognitive condition.  Numerous assessment tools will be reviewed in during hands-on training.  Clinical treatment application through case studies will be experienced that simulate treatment OT and PT in functional goal areas. 
 
Time-ordered Agenda for 6 Hour CEU:
 
-8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Registration, refreshments 
 
-8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.
Define cognition, cognitive abilities/skills, review information processing, learning, generalization, mental power, executive function and specific skills of attention, memory, problem solving, calculations, visual perception, visual spatial processing, understanding and utilizing language
 
-9:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Review of etiology of cognitive dysfunction (acute, new onset & progressive disease processes) – Define a frame of reference – What is cognitive rehabilitation?  What is cognitive management?  Compare and contrast cognitive dysfunction and impact on rehabilitation for Alzheimer’s dementia versus acute illness & injury – TBI, CVA, etc.
 
-9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
Didactic discussion -- Age Related Cognitive Changes & Mild Cognitive Impairment
 
-10:00 a.m. 10:15 a.m.                               BREAK
 
-10:15 a.m. to 11:15 a.m.
              Clinical Frames of Reference – Cognitive Disabilities Model reviewed – Review of Allen                       
              Cognitive Levels and impact on the client’s best ability to function.
              Level 1 to Level 6 reviewed with pertinent case study application
 
-11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.
Spaced Retrieval Technique – Screening for, training of technique
 
-12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m.                            LUNCH
 
 
-1:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.
Clinical Frames of Reference continued:  Cognitive Retraining principles & Dynamic Interactional Model of Cognition
 
-2:15 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.                               BREAK
 
-2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Evaluation of Functional Cognition - assessment tools used throughout the therapy continuum:  Interview, Cognitive screening tools, evaluation of executive function
            Didactic and hands on exploration of tools in small groups
Learn to define the right assessment tool, implement, interpret and document
 
Treatment interventions for cognitive rehabilitation & management  
Didactic and experiential application of goal directed treatment approaches
Documentation principles for cognitive intervention
 
 
Approvals:
PT:    NVPTA approved 6 hrs CEU
OT:    Meets requirements for PDU criteria for NBCOT
PT:     Approved MPTA for 6 hrs CEU

Cancellation Policy

Therapists Training Therapists reserves the right to cancel the course at anytime.  In the unlikely event of a cancellation, TTT will issue a full refund of the registration fee, but will not be responsible for any other charges incurred by the registrant due to the cancellation of the course.

Registrants canceling outside (10 calendar days) of the course may receive a refund less a 20% cancellation fee, transfer to another course without penalty, or keep a credit with us for a future course without penalty.

Registrants canceling within (10 calendar days) of the course are not eligible to receive any refunds. Registrants have the option to transfer to another course, or keep a credit with us for a future course.
