Capturing your Credentials for OT students
This course is designed for OT students/4 Hour Course
Capturing Your Credentials was created by an occupational therapist and occupational therapy assistant. The primary focus of this course is to provide attendees with tangible hands on tips that can be utilized when they sit for the NBCOT board exam. So often occupational therapy students hear “it’s all about selecting the BEST answer” but what does that really mean? This course will provide everyone with a firm grasp on how to decipher complex questions, and specific strategies for selecting the “BEST” answer. Capturing Your Credentials goal is for everyone to pass the exam THE FIRST TIME. With the vast amount of material covered on this test, conventional studying techniques and overall memorization of facts is not useful for most. This course will also cover available test preparation tools, study techniques and the exam sign up process. Lastly, Capturing Your Credentials will provide each attendee with 50 practice questions where they can immediately apply the newly learned techniques. Each question was hand selected and will be reviewed during the course.
I graduated from WMU with hopes and aspirations of passing the test and immediately starting my career. Unfortunately, that wasn’t my path. I indeed took the test more than once. I had a great opportunity to try a vast array of test prep products. While studying, I was overwhelmed with the amount of material that is covered. I found myself asking questions like how will I ever remember all this material? How do I know I am studying the right stuff? What if I study all of this and it’s not even on the test? After I finally passed the test, I figured I would share my knowledge base and the techniques that ultimately got me over the hump. I’m sure WMU wasn’t happy with me bringing down their passing rate-Oops! Rather than dwell on this, I created a 1-hour test prep course and have been presenting it to WMUs graduate classes as well as MIOTAs monthly webinars for the past 3 years. I have received phenomenal feedback from everyone at WMU and MIOTA so I revamped it and expanded it to a 4 hour course changing the name to “Capturing Your Credentials”.
Capturing Your Credentials is different from the other products on the market for many reasons. No other product educates on the sign-up process. I remember the added stress from the sign-up process (ACVF forms, sending transcripts, the timing of getting your ATT letter and signing up at these Prometric centers). Multiple students have taken the test and not received their test scores in a timely fashion due to not following the process (just to name one sign up process dilemma). We broke that process down into 3 simple steps and will run through it with all attendees verbally and visually with photographs. Our course is unique since it focuses heavily on “how” to read and decipher questions. With the vast amount of material, it is nearly impossible to memorize everything. There are specific techniques on how to breakdown the questions and select the “best” answer (even when you do not have a clue what the answer is). We also cover other test prep material (pros and cons) and even encourage using some of it in conjunction with our course. The course also provides useful “day of test tips” and study techniques. During the course we have students create a tentative study plan. Previous students have loved the calendar plan to organize where to start studying and end studying. It has provided them some mental clarity and starting point. Lastly, we conclude the course with 50 practice questions with focus on applying the newly learned techniques. Each question will be reviewed and discussed. The questions are formatted just like the real NBCOT exam. The OTR course varies slightly and has a little more information due to the clinical simulation portion of the test.
Other products such as NBCOT offer wonderful tools such as practice tests, knowledge match games, study guides, and flash cards but don’t focus on “how” to read and answer the questions like we offer. We encourage the use of some of these tools and will share with attendees how they will benefit from them, as well as the costs of other products. AOTA offers practice tests questions/tests which can be beneficial in some regards. Capturing Your Credentials is interactive, and way more affordable compared to other products (I remember how tight money was as student; we took that into consideration when setting a price point).
